Mass Crimes, Impunity, and Justice : Julian Borger & Ann Curry

The Gallery, 6:45–8:30 PM

February 10, 2016

We expect murderers to be caught and punished. But what about mass murderers? Are some crimes so enormous they go beyond the reach of the law? In an age of seeming impunity for the atrocities in Syria, Ukraine, and elsewhere, Julian Borger’s book The Butcher’s Trail is a reminder there is an alternative. It tells the story of the pursuit for Balkan war criminals, the most successful manhunt of modern times, a tale that has lain buried under layers of official secrecy until now. Members joined us for a discussion about the lessons of that secret history between Borger, the Guardian’s World Affairs editor and photojournalist and former network news anchor and international correspondent Ann Curry, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
