They Will Have to Kill Us First

The Library, 6:45–11 PM

March 3, 2016

When Islamic jihadists took control of northern Mali, they did more than enforce their violent practices; they banned all forms of music. The documentary They Will Have to Kill Us First chronicles the adversities Malians faced under the oppressive invasion and shines a light on the extraordinary perseverance of a handful of musicians who refused to give into the prohibition of music. Members joined us for a screening of the documentary, followed by a Q&A with the director, Johanna Schwartz, and a special musical performance by one of the film’s subjects, Songhoy Blues, before Nick Zinner took over the DJ booth. Distributed by BBC Worldwide North America.
