Offsite: Hansel & Gretel at the Park Avenue Armory

Madison Square

03 August, 2017

Members were invited to catch the last days of this monumental 21st-century installation in which the environment is disconcerting, the entrance is unexpected, and every movement is tracked and surveyed by drones. Created by Pritzker Prize-winning architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, and artist Ai Weiwei, the piece explored the meaning of public space in our surveillance-laden world, referencing the story of Hansel & Gretel in which the children lose their way and feel a sense of menace in a space they know and trust.
