Creative Couples: Robin Rhode with Performa Director & Curator RoseLee Goldberg

Madison Square

16 January, 2018

NeueHouse launched a series highlighting powerful creative couples — whether artistic, romantic, or business duos —  who choose to collaborate. This month, Performa Director RoseLee Goldberg discussed the commissioning process, and featured highlights from South African artist Robin Rhode’s Performa 15 Commission, Arnold Schönberg’s Erwartung, presented in Times Square, and which has recently been released on film. Composed in 1909, Erwartung tells the melancholy story of love, longing and loss. In Rhode’s hands, the one-act opera is transformed to reflect the experiences of South African women who were separated interminably from their husbands by the migrant labor system of apartheid.
