Book Launch: Walter Hopps, the Marvelous Mad Maven of Modern Art in America

Madison Square

13 June, 2017

Walter Hopps, the ringmaster for some of the greatest moments in contemporary American Art – the curator behind early shows of everyone from Rauschenberg and Warhol and Kienholz through Marcel Duchamp, whose very first retrospective he helmed (in 1964, in Pasadena!) – was one clean gleam of a man: often smashed and chronically late, but never less than completely inspired, and always witty in the extreme. Deborah Treisman and Anne Doran, who worked with Hopps on his just released autobiography The Dream Colony before he died in 2005, discussed his life and career and the book with Lawrence Weschler.
