Art and Activism with Carrie Mae Weems & Khary Lazarre-White

Madison Square

January 30, 2019

Carrie Mae Weems and Khary Lazarre-White, a novelist, activist and co-founder of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, discussed the intersection of art and activism and how such efforts can engender and empower social change across communities. Considered one of the most influential contemporary American artists, Carrie Mae Weems, a MacArthur “Genius” grant award winner, has investigated family relationships, cultural identity, sexism, class, political systems, and the consequences of power. Khary Lazarre-White, in turn, leads a dedicated effort to empower the new generation as the Executive Director of Brotherhood/Sister Sol – a youth development and social justice organization based in Harlem.
