This weekend, Miami becomes an international hub for contemporary art as Art Basel returns, accompanied by a constellation of satellite fairs, local exhibitions, and immersive events. To help navigate the week’s creative abundance, we spoke with Rae Belnavis, marketing manager at the renowned Pace Gallery. Read on for her insights on must-see artists and exhibitions, standout brand activations, and her go-to spots for unwinding at the end of the day.

NEUEJOURNAL: How would you describe your role as a marketing manager in the art industry, particularly during a major event like Art Basel?

Rae Belnavis: My role is all about connecting our artists and their work with a global audience. I focus on understanding the key objectives behind each exhibition and crafting campaigns that tell compelling stories about the artists’ projects. As a Marketing Manager for an international art gallery, events like Art Basel and Miami Art Week are important because they bring together key people and platforms that can help elevate our artists’ profiles. It’s a great opportunity to showcase their work on a bigger stage, engage with collectors and collaborators, and solidify the gallery’s presence in the international art scene.

NEUEJOURNAL: Interdependence has been mentioned as one of the prevailing concepts during Miami Art Week. How do you see that playing out in the broader art world?

Rae Belnavis:  Art has this unique power to bring people together, spark meaningful conversations, and reflect the world we live in, and I think the idea of interdependence really captures how deeply art connects to everything—culture, society, and global issues. Artists, galleries, and audiences all influence each other and contribute to a much larger cultural ecosystem. Through art, we can explore the interconnectedness of human experiences, and it’s exciting to see how these connections drive us forward and create change.

Kith x BMW | Maison Margiela x Kozo

NeueJournal: Have any brand activations, pop-ups, or collaborations at Art Basel caught your attention as innovative or particularly well-executed?

Rae Belnavis: I’m really looking forward to the installations at Faena Art Week, especially Nicholas Galanin’s Seletega. It addresses important social issues like colonialism and cultural erasure, and it stands out for its powerful engagement with these timely cultural conversations.

Ronnie Feig’s KITH x BMX 2024 exhibition and Pharrell Williams’ digital platform JOOPITER’s J Balvin collaboration have also caught my eye—both are at the forefront of streetwear and “hypebeast” culture. These experiences are a unique mix of art, fashion, technology, and innovation, offering not just art but also collectibles that bridge these creative industries in exciting new ways.

With Design Week happening at the same time, we’re seeing capsule collections that blur the lines between fashion and contemporary art. It’s incredible how art is evolving, becoming more immersive and dynamic, inviting people into a world where creativity and culture collide. I’m especially looking forward to Maison Margiela’s collaboration with artist Kozo and Off-White’s partnership with pro golfer Paris Hilinski.

LVMH’s Culture House will be also be a highlight, combining art, luxury, and community with panel discussions and a pop-up gallery showcasing standout works from emerging voices. It’s all part of what makes this time of year so exciting; art is an overall experience that crosses industries.

NeueJournal: You mentioned this is your first year at Art Basel while working in the art world. What are you looking forward to?

Rae Belnavis: Marketing in the art world requires a balance of strategizing, creating authentic narratives, understanding your audience, and navigating the relationship between creativity and commerce. I’m excited to build connections and learn how others approach marketing in this unique space; I’m always curious about how other professionals bring their campaigns to life in such a visually driven and competitive market, but particularly learning from art dealers, curators and advisors gives new perspectives to an industry I’m learning to navigate.

Dante's Hifi

NeueJournal: No guide is complete without good drinks and greater eats! What are some must-visit dining spots, nightlife events, or hidden gems that you’re excited to check out while in Miami?

Rae Belnavis: As a big fan of the vinyl bar atmosphere, I’m definitely checking out Dante’s HiFi. With a great lineup of events throughout Art Basel, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy live music and cocktails in a vintage-inspired space.

I’m also looking forward to The Cultivist x Capital One’s Moroccan-inspired pop-up, DAR MIAMI 1446, curated by Michelin-starred chef Rose Previte within Hassan Hajjaj’s immersive art installation. The experience includes a tea salon by day and a vibrant evening program with Moroccan music by Simo Lagnawi and late-night DJ sets from DJ Pee .Wee (Anderson .Paak) and Kaytranada.

And naturally, I’ve made a reservation at Carbone for some classic Italian before heading back to NYC—it’s always a memorable meal and the perfect indulgence to wrap up my trip.
